Pen Pal Exchange

Welcome Ms. Kathy Shields' third grade class! We are excited to do a pen pal exchange with you this semester and hope all of us can learn more about each other, learn about our countries, and cultivate friendships.

Our Welcome Video!

Our English Club this semester has fifteen students. From left to right, top row: Kobe, Kevin, James, Feras, Angela, Cindy, Julie, Linda, & Cindy. From left to right, bottom row: Wi-Wi, Sophie, Grace, Cherry, Vivian, and Shiny.

First Project: Matching Letters & Drawings

The students have written letters about themselves and their favorite activity. They have also drawn pictures of their favorite activities. Each letter corresponds to one drawing. Our pen pals will match the correct letter with the picture each student drew. Good luck! Here is a picture of one of our student's work (we accidentally forgot to tell the students to not put their names on the letters, oops!):

Second Project: Brochures! Introduce your city, state, or country!

Our students will make brochures for Ms. Shields' class introducing Kaohsiung City and Taiwan.

Third Project: Exchanging Letters

Our students are now exchanging letters with our pen pals. Here is one of our exchanges:

When our Taiwanese students received their letters from their pen pals, they were very excited. They were awed that the American students typed their letters and were a little overwhelmed by the length of their letters. The Taiwanese students immediately took out their Chinese dictionaries, though, and began to translate their letters. They asked us all sorts of interesting questions in Chinese like, "Teacher, what does 'I can't wait for you to write back to me' mean? They cannot wait for us to write? Why, Teacher?" The students, no matter how long their letters to their pen pals, really liked this exchange.

Pen Pal Videos

Our students are also filming videos for Ms. Shields' class to get a more effective cultural exchange. Check it out!
