Community and Responsibility Curriculum
(4th & 5th graders)
During my time at Teachers College, Columbia University (TC), I collaborated with four other colleagues to develop a 2-year curriculum for fourth and fifth graders. The curriculum theme is Community and Responsibility. If you would like more information about the curriculum, please contact me. Below, you will see a couple of slides and photos from an interactive presentation we gave in our course at TC.
Within each unit (Unit 1: Family as Community, Unit 2: School as Community, Unit 3: Neighborhood as Community, Year 1 Self-Reflection Project, Unit 4: City as Community, Unit 5: State as Community, Unit 6: Country & World as Community, Year 2 Self-Reflection Project) are learning experiences. Learning experiences are organized in a manner that creates a strong foundation for understanding the below themes (See Unit Theme Chart below). Learning experiences are organized first in initial engagement with the subject material and then go into a deeper exploration. Finally, learning experiences end with culminating activities. Each unit has a Learning Experiences Bank and has suggested topics of inquiry for students to explore. The curriculum was designed to access multiple intelligences and to also strengthen certain process skills. There is so much to say about this 2-year curriculum we designed so please feel free to ask me questions about it.
